This was Zach's first time to run a marathon and he broke all the rules of running by staying with me at my pace when he could have cruised on ahead. More of the Las Vegas adventure

Okay, neither Charles nor I can remember the sequence of our last 4 days in Las Vegas. So...we went to see a burlesque show one night. I was not shocked, dismayed, or offended (I am not easily offended) but now that I've seen a burlesque show, I'm good. Same as with riding a mule. Done. We had "friends" of the main star of the burlesque sitting behind us, encouraging her to show her t*tt**s. For some reason I thought it was going to be one of those shows with the women wearing the humongous headdresses, descending stairs. Nope. Mostly just stripping to a G string.

We went up in the Stratosphere. I guess it's one of the highest lookout points. They actually have rides up there if you're ready to die. Just kidding. That's just my age speaking.

One night we went to the old, original street of Las Vegas: Fremont Street. They still have the original casinos like the Gold Nugget. Compared to the new ones on The Strip, they are kind of gross. BUT!..... They have closed off the street and put a canopy overhead that is actually a huge TV screen. Every night at 8:00 they do a video. The night we were there it was a video to the song "American Pie" by Don McLean. Yeah, Sheri, Kitz and Dan, you know the song and it should remind you of being in high school. It was really, really cool. That alone was worth the trip to the old town.

I think Wednesday was the day we went to Red Rock Canyon. That was all of 15 minutes from our condo. We were both in awe of how diverse the landscape is out there, especially compared to what we know here in Ohio. Charles was too happy to scramble out on rocks and let me photograph him. Me: feet firmly planted in terra firma. Granddad, I kinda blame you. I have these ankles that just want to collapse in the least little change in terra firma. Thanks.

Surprisingly, we were so busy I didn't put a single coin in a single slot machine. Didn't even care or miss it. One thing I noticed: when out on the town on a Saturday night, you're gonna see lots of skin. I don't know how girls can keep their vees covered with an inch of fabric!

We rode the roller coaster over New York New York (casino). Very rough. We both had a headache when it was over. But New York New York!!!! WOW! The outside was amazing! So was Paris. And the water fountain show choreagraphed to music at the Bellagio!!

I didn't think Las Vegas would be that interesting, but it really was. At night though, the sidewalk traffic would rival the traffic of Disney World at closing.

Las Vegas/Grand Canyon Vacation

Charles and I just returned from vacation yesterday. We spent a week in Las Vegas and Grand Canyon. We flew in to Salt Lake City on Friday afternoon (9/10). Charles wanted to experience the landscape between SLC and Vegas, so we rented a car and drove to Vegas. Wow. It was a beautiful drive, especially the descent through the mountains at the edge of Utah, going through a tiny corner of Arizona into Nevada. I wish I had my camera out, but I thought it was packed in my suitcase.

Friday
We checked into our condo, bought some groceries, and then went down to the strip. I'm not a gambler, but I do enjoy architecture. Those casinos are AMAZING!!!!! I think the one that took up the most land was Caesar's Palace. It was huge. But my favorite, or two favorites, were New York New York, and Paris.

Saturday
We had to pick up our tickets to the Cirque de Soleil Beatles Love show for later that evening. Marlee and Ashley have both asked what my favorite part of the trip was. I would have to say that that show was right up there close to the top, although you can't top the Grand Canyon. Charles is a huge Beatles fan. Huge. He had seen the show when he was out there with his daughter 3 years ago, and he wanted me to experience it. It was just, WOW!!

After the show we walked along the strip. Many of the casinos have "shows" for people on the sidewalk. We saw the fountain show that's set to music at the Bellagio. Way cool. It's crazy how many people are out there along the strip at night. THOUSANDS! It's like Disney World at closing time.

Sunday
We left the condo (did not check out, returning after 2 days) at 5am to drive to the Grand Canyon. I so wanted to see some of those big cacti, saguaro, but they aren't in that area. We were scheduled for a mule ride at the canyon for 1pm (or something like that). We got there quite early. We had reservations to spend the night in a cabin close to the rim, at Bright Angel. The rules for the mule ride were pretty clear: must have a hat, must wear long sleeves. I had to go shopping at Target after we got to Las Vegas to find a hat. It was lovely. If I can post some pics, you'll see what I'm talking about. Bought a long sleeve T shirt in the gift shop at Bright Angel. So.... then the mule ride. I was expecting something scary. I was really nervous about it. I thought we were riding part way down the canyon, but it wasn't anything like that. And I am finding out something completely new about myself. I'm getting more scared of things as I get older. Specifically of heights. We didn't ride anywhere near the rim. We rode an hour to get to the rim, then got off our asses and walked to the rim.

My mule was named Cracker. I don't feel the need to ever get on another pack animal. You know what the butts look like on Macaques? Yeah. You know how they got that way? From riding mules.

Not only was the ride painful, but Cracker fell down on both front knees on the return ride. I screamed. Cracker growled. Yes, mules growl.

Monday
This day was blissful. We did a slow-water raft ride on the Colorado through Glen Canyon. Glen Canyon is above the Grand Canyon. The sides of the canyon were 1200 feet tall on both sides of us. Truly awesome and amazing. The rock formations were so cool. I didn't have my camera with me because I thought it wouldn't be allowed, so any pics we have are what Charles took. I still need to get them from him. We had a 3 hour bus ride to get to the rafting launch site. We went through the Navajo reservation, which is one of the poorest of all reservations. It was mostly mobile homes, very far apart, and even the small houses we saw were decrepit and many had outhouses for their bathroom. It's interesting that the Hopi tribe that was relocated in Arizona (can't remember the town) is very wealthy, whereas the Navajo tribe is one of the poorest.

After the raft trip, the bus ride back to the Grand Canyon stopped on the Navajo reservation at a depot/gift shop. I bought a pair of earrings that were made there on the reservation. I wanted to get some of the turquoise and sliver jewelry made there, but holy cow. Mucho $$$$$

Well, I think I will try to continue this tomorrow. I need to go to bed. Trying to get my body back in the EST frame of time. Gotta get up at 5am. yuck.

Ironman 70.3 Boulder Race Report

My first 70.3 distance race was a great success, and I must say that it was easier than I thought it was going to be. Pete, you trained me well, thank you!

Training Totals:
Swim: 128,225 yards; 49 hours
Bike: 872 road miles; 58 road hours; 71 trainer hours
Run: 416.8 miles; 76 hours

To start, I want to thank God for giving me such a great training and race experience, thank Trey for being so supportive during my many months of training, thank Pete and Sara for spending time educating and coaching me thru the process, and thank everyone who came out during the race to support me on such an important day. I know that I had a great race because of all the support I get from my family and friends.

The first wave started at 6:30am so my alarm went off nice and early – 3:30am. We arrived in Boulder around 5:00 so I had plenty of time to set up my transition area, meet the girls I would be racing with and take pictures with Pops. He was able to get a media pass so he was allowed in the transition area. As we waited for my wave to start, I started getting really nervous – to the point of causing my stomach to hurt.

Once I started my swim, I calmed down, my stomach didn’t hurt anymore, and I got into my groove. I felt good and enjoyed my swim. As I came out of the water, Mom was there to yell out my time. She did this for me during my Olympic and I really like it. I asked her to do the same for this race too, thanks Mom! 37 minutes was about what I had expected; not disappointed but not thrilled.

I had a hard time transitioning from the swim to the bike. My water bottle got caught under the bar, the straw got knocked off, and I had to crawl under the bar to pull my bike thru the other side. What a mess. At least this time I remembered to buckle my helmet so I didn’t get yelled at at the mounting line.

Once I was on my bike, I had a great ride. The course is fast and smooth. I was able to get up to 42mph; the fastest I have gone on my bike so far. On the hill where I reached my top speed, the pros started to lap me. I was booking it at 38mph or so, passing people, and the pros where passing me like I was just out for a cruise. It was amazing. Sara come out on the bike course to see me. As I finished my first lap, I heard Mom yell my name and my time, then I saw Pops snapping pictures and Trey cheering me on. It is so uplifting to see people you know out on the course supporting you! After seeing everyone, I was re-energized for the second lap. For the 56 mile ride, I was able to average 19.7mph. I was really pleased with my time, but I was worried that I didn't pace myself for the 13.1 mile run coming up.

As I started my run, my legs felt strong and I felt good. I planned to run each mile and walk thru the water stations. The first station came up, but I didn’t feel like I needed to walk so I didn’t. Sometime during the second mile, Chris started running with me so when the second water station came up, I didn’t walk thru that one either. Chris and I ran together nearly the entire rest of the race. Talking to my newly found friend took my mind off what I was doing and it made the time pass really fast. I only walked a few steps thru each water station while I refilled my bottle, but then I would speed up to catch back up with Chris. Although I wasn't following my run/walk plan, I felt good. Sara and Mom met me at mile 5, Dad was snapping pictures at mile 6, and several other friends were scattered around the run course too. I had so much support throughout the entire race, it was truly amazing. Each time I saw someone along the course, it gave me an extra boost to keep going. Around mile 12, my legs started to get tired and I couldn’t keep up with Chris any longer, I had to walk. It felt good to walk, but I knew I was really close to the finish line. I allowed myself to walk only for a minute, then I pushed myself thru the last mile. As I approached the finished line, Mom was there shouting my time and urging me on. Under 6 hours total! I was so happy!

I enjoyed the race so much more than I could have ever expected to. It was an amazing experience and I'm looking forward to my full IM in Houston. Thanks again to everyone who came out to support me during such an important day; it means the world to me!

Danna goes 70.3!

We have another half ironman finisher in the family! Today Danna finished her first Ironman 70.3 in Boulder, Colorado. She finished in an amazing 5:57! That is a killer time for any half ironman and she did it on her first race. It was so exciting. Such a great day. Every time we saw her she was smiling. She had a great race, a great day, and now she has her sites set on the full ironman next May. Pops scored a media pass and, as usual, took tons of amazing pictures. I went out on the course and got some video, but she passes by so fast that they are just short clips.

Danna has a week of playing mom with Soren, Wyatt and Ashton, but promises to post her race report soon.

Congratulations, Danna. You did it!

Danna was up at 3:30 a.m. and we were at the race site just before 5. It was a beautiful morning!

1st Race of the Season

Today I did a 16.5 mile race in Boulder, CO called the Koppenberg Climb. Let me tell you, it was an experience that I'm not sure I will ever want to experience again. During the race, we had 3 laps that took us up a 17% grade dirt hill with ruts at least a foot deep running down the middle of the road. I am NOT prepared when I see this. I knew that about 1/2 of the course would be on a dirt road, but I did not know that the most difficult part of the ride was going to look like the terrain that Trey and I four wheel up. Anyway, I gather my courage, and start up the best path I could see. I was about 1/2 way up and the hill gets so steep that my back wheel starts to spin freely beneath me. I lose momentum and a fall. I end up hiking the rest of the way up, and I start to think that I do not want to do that 2 more times. At this point, I am the last one in my group, I fell, and I'm getting a cross wind (later finding out that it was blowing at a constant 30 mph) that is nearly pushing me off the road.

2nd lap I'm still alone and can't even see my group they are so far ahead. I'm down in my drops (however you are supposed to say that) and in my lowest gear pushing against the wind. I reach the hill again, and attempt to go up a different path. Not too far up it, the path starts to tilt toward a deep rut and my wheel slips off and I fall, again. Again I'm hiking my bike the rest of the way up only to face the cross wind and try not to get blown over.

3rd lap. The head wind was so strong that I was getting a nice facial from the blowing sand/dirt. I decide not to even attempt riding up the hill this time, I just hike it from the beginning. The cross wind is so bad that even on the fast sections of the course, I'm breaking because I'm afraid to get going too fast.

Needless to say, I was the LAST one to finish. I hated it and wanted to cry. The only thing that I'm happy about was that I finished and didn't quit. Over all, I took me 1:12 to ride 16.5 miles. Not good.

The Dallas Whiterock Marathon

Sunday, Zach, Nana and Kara ran the half marathon at Whiterock. It was a good day for running! Perfect race conditions. Zach had made a pace goal of 8:00 miles and shattered that goal with his 1:42 finish (7:45/miles!). Nana and Kara both beat their previous half marathon times; Nana with a 2:25 and Kara right behind her with a 2:27. Nice job guys! Way to represent the Parker family!

Ya know, for all my computer skills, I'm not all up there with the other electronic stuff. My camera was set on black and white, so that's what we've got. But the child is beautiful. Yes he is. He kept us worried for a while, and then he decided to get here 7 days early. Little booger. I wonder what he has in store for us. Little children (Maddox) are not allowed in the hospital due to the H1N1 virus. Marlee was so disappointed about that.

But he is here, and I got to hear his first cry!! I my gosh. I have never experienced that in real life. How amazing.

Kuddos to Nana. She raced a triathlon in the pouring rain on Sunday! The race was supposed to be a 300 yard swim, 13.8 mile bike that included "nice hill" followed by a 5k run. To get to the main part of the bike course you have to cross over a creek, and with all of the rain the road was flooded, so they had to either cancel the race or change the bike course. The only option for changing the course was to ride as far as you could go before the road flooded (a little less than 3 miles) and then turn around and come back. So that is what they did, and they did two loops. The 13.8 mile bike became 6 miles! Pretty funny. But it was still a race and Nana did awesome, placing first in her age group! Woo Hoo! I don't know if she even knows this, but her bike average was 20.2 mph! Way to go, Nana. That is two first place finishes in a row so we expect nothing less than first place from now on :)

Revo Big Bass on Lake Ray Roberts

This past saturday Zach fished the first annual Revo Big Bass Tournament on Ray Roberts. Unfortunately I did not get any pictures but you can go here http://www.basschamps.com/basschamps/newsBigBass.cfm?tournament_id=17&type=team&yearSelected=2009 to read about the day. During tournaments like these, anglers have a chance to weigh in every hour. Zach had a 1st place hour, a 2nd place hour and was .24lbs shy of winning overall. All 174 anglers were given the chance to compete for a $300 rod combo in a pitching contest, which Zach won!

Thank you Granny and Granddad for coming out in the rainy weather! Zach- Avery, Alissa and I are so proud of you!

Labor Day

Just a little update from Aubrey. We all had a great holiday weekend. Avery and I loaded up on chocolate and headed to see G-force on saturday in 3-D. Pretty cute. Zach went dove hunting in the evening. Sunday was a day of relaxing for everyone except Zach who had to wait for an hour and a half at the Care Now clinic because of the poison ivy that was making his eye swell shut. Then he had to go mow and take care of a flat tire on his truck. The girls and I hung around the house playing in the water and doing laundry (me). We had a good day but missed Zach. After all the mowing he got to come home and clean his boat and truck and get ready to head out to l*ke fork on monday. That's when he discovered the dove he overlooked from saturday night. So, dead bird+hot truck for 24 hours=nasty smell. Febreeze does wonders. Zach was up and out the door at 3am monday morning. What a trooper. Avery, Alissa and I decided it would be a good day for the zoo. We got to the D*llas Z*0 (learned that from Sara) just as it was opening and had a great time. This was Alissa's first trip to the zoo that she actually seemed to pay attention and to top it off there was a little water area that we splashed around in before we left. Could not have asked for a better day. Here are some pics.

Estes Park Ride

Erin and I went for a ride last weekend. We were going to go from Estes Park to Lyons - about a 40 mile ride. From Estes Park, we had about 10 mile climb up hill for a total of 2,000 feet elevation gain. We were 30 minutes into the hill before the rain started. It was a light drizzle and we had no lightning so we decided to keep going. It was still drizzling once we reached the top of the hill, which made it a cold and slippery decent into Lyons. After a mile of wet, cold 35mph downhill, we reached a church and decided to stop. We called Erin's parents and they picked us up. We didn't reach our destination, but we got in a good workout anyway.

The Loner in Colorado

I haven't posted anything in a long time...so here is what I have been up to.

Crawfish boil at the end of May was a blast. Ate 180lbs of crawfish plus who knows how many pounds of potatoes, corn, hush puppies, pie, rice crispy treats, and so on. We estimate about 50 people showed up and the cops were NOT called! Our neighbors came and loved every minute. They wonder why we only do it once a year. It will be on again next year and hopefully some of the family can come this time.

I have climbed a few 14ers. The first was snow packed and difficult to get to the top. We didn't have snowshoes so we had to "posthole" to the top in snow that sometimes came up to mid thigh. We had a blast and the dogs loved it too.

My first triathlon was yesterday. I did ok considering I didn't take my training too seriously. There were about 3400 participants which makes it the 4th largest tri in the nation. The open water swim was crazy, but a ton of fun. I think I did well on the bike section, but the run was really difficult for me. Being in wave 22, my transition station was pretty far from everything so my transitions took a while. Over all, it was a success. I finished in 1:45, felt good, and helped raise $100K for breast cancer research. I learned a lot and look forward to bettering my time next year.

I would like to post pictures, but I guess blogger doesn't support bitmap files and I don't know how to change that. So, I guess I'll send out an email with some pictures. Sorry.

Swim Meet, Family and Coaches

I wanted to make a comment or two about the swim meet from my point of view, behind the lens. And this is not just from this swim meet but all that I've attended. First I want to commend Soren on commitment and dedication to her sport. Soren you have honored your mother and father by giving your BEST in both practice and competition. What a fine example you are to your cousins and friends.

Second I commend Pete and Sara for your dedication and sacrifice of time and money to support Soren. The money and especially TIME that you invest in Soren and Reese will surely bless their lives and they will remember it when it comes time for them to do the same. Soren will remember the warmth of a mother's hug between meets and the care of finding food and drinks. The videos, yells and little prays and flow during these meets will never be forgotten.

Finally I want to commend Pete as a mentor, coach and most of all a strong, loving, caring father. One that Soren looked for after each race to receive words of wisdom, instruction and the touch of a firm steadfast hand of love hearing the words "Good Job Soren".

What a wonderful family God has blessed us with. Saturday Soren was represented by 11 family members including Great Grandparents. Thank You Lord for this family.

Thank You for ALL my children, sons-in-laws, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, parents and grandparents!!

And so goes "Family Matters".

The Disco Triathlon

Nana had her first race of the season this past weekend. She completed the Disco Sprint Tri at Johnson Branch on Lake Ray Roberts. It was a 500 yard open water swim, 16.7 mile bike and a 5k run. She had a great race, smiled from start to finish! Her times were: swim: 10:54 bike: 1:03 run: 31:51 for a total race time of 1:51.

We finished off the day by celebrating Pop's birthday! We ate, drank and were merry. Zach and Pete went running in the hail storm and missed being struck by lightning by mere feet. It was quite exciting. A great weekend, as usual. Nice job on another very successful race, Nana!

Hockey

Sunday afternoon rolls around and it's time to watch Mat play hockey......I still haven't figured out why anyone in their, Ok so we get to Grapevine and we see the star player leaving his car. What is all that stuff in the bag......Great Scott! and he has two sticks! Too much to carry. Anyway, “…Most of the best hockey players on the American teams learned the game watching TV or playing a video game. American bred players are few and far between.…I've been told however Mat comes close to being as good as the stars from across the border….and can boast of being one of The Colony's superior players.

The cold weather game of choice as Mat grew up in Irving was roller hockey. This was a game played outside with teams of six or seven players using short curved sticks. Players propelled a ball into a cage somewhat smaller than a soccer goal. The young Mat became a proficient roller hockey player and easily transitioned into hockey as that game gained hold with both players and public to become “the winter game.”

I suppose most hockey players get hit in the head enough times that they can't tell the difference between winter and summer......so what was it Sunday 105 degrees? OK inside now and cooled off.

Well it's not long before he gets a chance to play and play he does. He goes from one end of the rink to the other and low and behold he puts the "puck in the basket" and Kara gets all excited, we yell and take pictures, I heard him say "Yow Baby" and Kara screams again! Hummm....

Mat's team quickly adds to the score and it's not long before the other team makes a come back. It was exciting and the fans were going crazy. Kara and Mom and kids found some good buys at Kirkland's... Mat made some awesome saves to keep his team in the lead. They inched it out 5 to 3 after 3 quarters.

I guess this was follow the leader! Maybe 3 blind mice.

It was fun watching the game although I did expect some blood or at least one fight; didn't happen they all left as friends should do after a hard played game.

Thanks Mat for the entertainment, I will attend more games.

Well yesterday turned into a very fun day. Nana and I always look forward to the fun family days. We all enjoyed our Father's Day cards and I especially like my new Garmin. I expect I will have to check it out as soon as it is charged. Thanks to the best kids in the world....could ask for more! I hope that you enjoy the pictures as much as I do!

Trey, Danna, Sheri and I just returned from our trip to Myrtle Beach. We enjoyed the sun, sea, food and a trip to Charleston. The history in Charleston is amazing as are the homes. We toured a "working" plantation although the previous crops grown are not being grown now and it is mainly supported by tourism. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the plantation home but the landscape was beautiful. They estimate one of the trees to be approximately 600 years old. We had a wonderful time and I would suggest Myrtle Beach for a get away place.

Plantation owners house. This is the 3rd house on the plantation. The first was lost by fire and the second was taken down by the owner at the time and built this house. A lot of the doors, floors and other things were used from the previous home.

Last weekend Nana participated in a 150 mile bike ride to benefit research for MS. She was on her new bike and rode 70 miles before the tour got cancelled due to lots of lightning and high winds. 70 miles! You go, Nana!

Mother's Day

As is customary for any and all holidays, we invaded Pops and Nana's house for an afternoon of playing on Mother's Day. We were served a wonderful meal of shish kabobs (Pops did almost ALL of the cooking!), sat around visiting and playing cards and then in the evening all of the moms got to go out with our aunts/cousins from Pops' side of the family for desert and wonderful fellowship. Thanks to all of the dads for taking care of the cooking, cleaning and kids so that we could enjoy a restful day.

OKC Memorial Marathon Success

What an exciting weekend. Let me break it down for you like a fraction (name that movie)

Danna came down last week to pick up her new bike that she will need to complete the two triathlons she is already signed up for (might be helpful in the race). After a couple of days frolicking around the metroplex she headed up to OKC for her maiden marathon. Pops and Nana headed up with her on Friday and they all picked Trey up from the airport.

On Saturday Kara and Sara showed up to join the fun and the eating began. Man did we eat some food over the course of Saturday and Sunday!

Sunday morning, predawn, we all headed down to the OKC Memorial. Danna, signed up for the full marathon; Sheri, Kara and Sara signed up for the half marathon. Weather conditions could have been better, but they also could have been a lot worse! It was not cold and we were all happy about that. The humidity and wind were a little oppressive, but manageable.

None of us were running together, so everyone will need to get on here and post their individual race reports. As for me (sara), it was a great day, great atmosphere, extreme humidity, crazy wind, lessons learned for future races, overall success. I started way in the back of the pack and it took 5 miles to thin out enough for me to be able to run at my pace, so that was a major lesson learned. If you want to run your pace, you MUST start with your pace group!

After finishing I was able to see Nana and Kara finish and then go out to mile 25 and watch for Danna to come in. That was awesome! They all had such great races, and that is amazing. I hope they will all share their battle stories here.

I am so excited for everyone. Kara was able to run further than she has ever run and says that it has motivated her to do another race and aim for a specific pace. Nana ran a personal best; 4+ minutes faster than her San Antonio time. Danna's story is very inspiring to me. Just over 6 months ago she was not even a runner and today she is a marathon finisher. She had to endure significant physical pain to make today a success and she pushed through with a smile on her face and the desire to get back out there again. I am very proud of you guys! Way to go!

Easter and White Trash

This is a little late but I thought you guys might like to see some of the foto's, especially Mat. Easter Sunday was a rainy day until the afternoon so I didn't get any pic's of the grand kids looking for eggs. The food was good, at least I liked it, I don't know what granddaddy's problem was. I did manage however to catch my grown kids and wife playing crockery (spelling may be off there) in the Front Yard with "B" cans laying all over. Next I see all of the grand kids headed down the middle of the street, including Alissa in the stroller, all nasty and barefoot. Now if They weren't white trash I don't know what is!

I guess if the nuts are good enough for the squirrels there good enough for the babies.

On saturday Grandad, Pete, Pops and Dan showed up to help Zach assemble our new swing set. It took almost 12 hours from start to finish, quite a project. A very BIG thank you goes out to everyone for coming over. It was a good day. Here are some pictures that show the progress...

Wyatt's Scholastic Accomplishments

Wyatt came home this weekend with 2 things from school in his take home folder that I, as a mother, have to boast about. 1 His first TAKS test results are in. He scored "commended" only missing 2 questions total, making his school-teacher-of-a-mother very proud! 2 He received a letter from the art teacher informing him that some of his artwork has been selected as "Camey's Best of the Best" for the year 2008-2009. This artwork will be on display at The Visual Art League of Lewisville. It has gallery hours on Saturdays and Sundays 1-4pm and will be on display from April 17th - May 3rd. The gallery is located at I-35 and Fox Avenue.

I'm babysitting Maddox today, and I was trying to take his picture while he was playing. But I wanted him to stop playing, turn to me, and give me a dazzling smile. No go. He knew what I wanted and kept his face turned away from me, until.......he wanted me to put together a small Thomas train set. Mind you, I've already assembled 2 other small train tracks, but apparently he needs ONE MORE. I didn 't act very interested (I'm kinda sore today from my surgery), so to try and woo me to put together this 3rd absolutely-crucial-to-quality-play-time train track he said he would smile for me. This is the "genuine" smile he gave me for my camera. I put the train track together.

Well, it seems my daughter is following in her mother's footsteps. The family is always laughing at the weird things that happen to me and it seems Ashton is already exibiting the same signs....

Ashton and Parker are in the shower and we hear a scream, I'm thinking possible soap in the eye. No, when I reached the door Parker wildly opens it and exclaims "Ashton's bleeding!" I look in the shower to see her holding the shampoo bottle in one hand and a tooth in the other, crying, with blood all down the front of her. She had appearently lost a tooth and not a loose tooth. She was trying to open the shampoo bottle with her teeth and her tooth gave out before the lid of the bottle did.

I was very gracious and did not laugh, only consoled her...and then laughed after I left the bathroom.

Emerging from the bathroom and once she was over the trauma she wondered if anyone would notice, "maybe if I talk out of the side of my mouth" she said, with her bottom teeth sticking out to the side. So, no harm done, at least it's one that will grow back in.

On another note, we all know Nana likes to play hard, and she really likes to play hard with her grandchildren. Parker is regularlly worn out by the fun, but usually not this worn out. Kara

Sunday Nana completed her 3rd triathlon of the season. What a great first racing season she has had! I am so proud of what she has accomplished.

This tri was a 300 yard pool swim (both of her other races were open water swims), a 15 mile bike and a 5k run. This is a very popular race because it is a really fun event and it sold out at 400 athletes, but on race morning there were 520 bikes in the transition area. I guess the race director just couldn't say no. With a pool swim, it is not a mass start; they send out swimmers every 10-15 seconds. That means that as some people are finishing the race, others are just coming out of the water. You don't know who the winner is until it is all over.

She had an awesome race and took 2nd in her age group! Wow! 3 races and 3 medals. Can't beat that. Congratulations, Nana, on another great race.

Granddad and Zach took first place at the championship tournament on Ray Roberts sunday. They have had a great season. Avery even got a little trophy for fishing a wednesday night tournament. She took it to "show and tell" at school today. Thanks to Graddad for fishing with my hubby and daughter. I like this one because Avery looks like a pirate.

Florida vacation

Charles and I were in Orlando, Florida last week, mostly relaxing and unwinding. We didn't do any of the theme parks, but instead went to the beach twice. One really cool thing we did was take an air boat tour on Cypress Lake. Wow!! I highly recommend it. I could've done that all day. We saw lots of alligators, bald eagles, egrets and other birds with really long legs. Our guide took us through marshes and down rivers and out on the deep part of the lake. Here are some photos:

Tennessee

Took about 1300 mile trip this week to Tennessee. If you want to see some color it's about to happen. I saw some red in the leaves but I would assume the real colors will burst out in a couple of weeks or so. Long trip by myself. Got home expecting some hugs and kisses.......wrong!! All I got was, mow the grass and pucky wife.....

It's still good to be home in my own bed.......another subject........my wife decided to buy a bed while I was gone. It should be here on the 15th......I wonder ........ penny for my thoughts?

You can click on Sara's Blog and get the whole story better than I can tell it. It was a great day, great weather and great kids....Can't say enough about how good the kids were. I had to get on to Pete once or twice but the rest were good!

It is exciting to see all of these folks swimming, biking and running especially when your (my kid) is one of them. They work so hard to abuse themselves and actually enjoy the torture. Pete and I cried when the beer truck left.....Sara was the lucky one, with the main line of saline.

Nana and I did the grandparent thing and went to the soccer games. We had a lot of fun with our kids. First was Ashton then Wyatt and tonight was Avery. Nana's First Sprint

Nana's First Sprint Tri!Nana had an AWESOME race today! This was a very difficult course for a first full sprint. It was a 500 yd swim, 14.6 mile bike, 5k run. Her total time was 1:55. We were waiting for her to finish her run thinking she would be another 10 minutes when she came sprinting down the hill!Pops snapped a picture and then sprinted down the hill to catch her coming across the finish line. Very exciting! I am so proud of her. She has worked so hard and I love that she had such a great race. To top it off, she got 3rd place in her age group so she got a medal! Yea Nana! Congratulations on a great race.

The cousins had a fun time last night swinging and jumping on the trampoline. They all got baths and spanked and sent to bed.

Well all is well and Nana is looking forward to so quite time and getting back to her workouts. The Kids are having fun and this morning was no different. They all got their stuff rounded up and headed for another craft. They are painting an ocean scene with paint sand glue and shells. I left for work.

Cousin Camp 2008

Once again Nana has taken on the task of entertaining all of the grandkids for "Cousin Camp".

As Campers gathered they all posed for a photo then the fun began. I left for work....had to work late too! They kids made all kinds of crafts with sea shells, mirrors, hot glue and paint. They did a pretty good job too!

As you will see from the pictures they have plenty to eat and they are staying cool in the pool.

This morning started with waffles for breakfast, except for Reese, no breakfast for her till later. Then crafts began again. Granddaddy showed up just in time to cut milk cartons in halves to make boats.

My first 14er!

I climbed my first 14er last weekend! We had a lot of fun, but it was hard. Early into the hike, we ran into snow and decided to leave the trail. We didn’t have a map, but we knew we needed to go up. We climbed on all fours over large rocks for several hours before we finally reached a ridge. There were several peaks around us, but we didn’t know which one we were supposed to climb. So we just headed across the side of the mountain towards the tallest peak we could see. As we were making our way across, we found the original trail and started to follow it. To our dismay, it took us back the other direction and the peak we were headed for wasn’t the right one. It took us about 6 hours to summit, but once we got to the top it was worth it! 14,248 feet above sea level is now the highest point I have ever been. We climbed over 4,440 vertical feet in about 4.5 miles.

On the way down, we decided to take the trail through the snow. This was probably my favorite part of the trip. I was slipping and sliding and laughing so hard I could barely see. The snow was knee to mid-thigh deep in most places, and really gave me a work out. After we were out of the snowy area, it was smooth sailing back to the campsite. It only took us 3 hours to descend so I was able to get in a good nap before everyone else arrived for the FIBArk (first in boating Arkansas River) festival.

This is the beginning of our trail, it is around 6:15am.

This is the first time we ran into the snowy area. It was still cool enough that it was icy and very slippery.

This is at about 12,000 feet. We decided to leave the snowy / icy trail and just start climbing up. The terrain was like this for several hours.

Ashley graduated cum laude Saturday with a degree in Marketing. Mark came up for the ceremony and we had a good time together. I was so emotional at the ceremony - I started crying when all the grads were walking into the arena! I'm a proud mom.
